Subject: Dean for the Graduate School
The University is actively engaged in an internal search for the position of Dean of the Graduate School. After 16 years in the Graduate School, five years as Associate Dean and 11 years as Dean, David Chapman will be returning July 1, 2009, to full time teaching, research and writing in the Department of Geology and Geophysics. We have been charged with finding his replacement. The Graduate School is important to the future of the University so our goal is to announce this open position broadly across campus.
Position Description
The Dean of the Graduate School has responsibilities at local, campus- wide, and national levels.
Within the Graduate School, the Dean oversees the day to day operation of all Graduate School offices and programs including thesis office, graduate records, graduate student tuition and health benefit programs, graduate fellowships, international teaching assistant language training, graduate student diversity initiative, and the office of post-doctoral affairs.
The Dean of the Graduate School sets and administers policy to the seventy-plus graduate degree granting departments, institutes, and centers at the University (both on the main and Health Sciences campuses). The Dean convenes and leads the Graduate Council in its governance role, guides the Graduate School and Graduate Council in their university-wide quality control and quality promotion responsibilities. The Dean is also the university’s accreditation liaison officer.
At the regional and national level, the Dean is expected to be a leader in graduate school organizations, advocating for and bringing best practices in graduate education to the University of Utah. The Dean is also responsible for securing resources for the support of graduate education and graduate students.
Critical characteristics of the dean include:
- Leadership
- Understanding graduate education through personal experience with successful student supervision
- A clear understanding of the importance of research, creative work and faculty scholarship
- The ability to exercise good judgment in complex situations
- A willingness to be a strong advocate for graduate students and post docs when that is appropriate
- Strong commitment to diversity
- Good interpersonal skills
- Serve as a member of the Sr. VP Academic Affairs leadership team
- Work effectively with deans and chairs
- Diplomacy with ability to execute
