University Visit Program

Who

The University Visit Program seeks prospective students who are underrepresented in graduate studies - ethnic and cultural minority groups (African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, American Indian/Alaska Natives, and Pacific Islanders.)

What

The UVP is an opportunity for a two way interview; The diversity office in the Graduate School in looking for students congruent with graduate programs at the University of Utah. We fully expect your experience will include personal attention in the following ways:

Academic
Visit and interview the academic department of your choice at the University of Utah with the goal of identifying an appropriate mentor/advisor.
Cultural
Tiered Photo of UVP Participants Find culturally appropriate venue for each prospective student coming in to explore how they can contribute to the increasingly multicultural community here in Salt Lake City.
Social
Networking meals and evening free time to explore Salt Lake City.
Financial
Return home with a clear picture of the financial aid resources available for your graduate study at the University of Utah. We will waive your application fee to the Graduate School.

When:

This visit program is designed to maximize your exposure to the University of Utah. Therefore it is offered twice a year:

  • Fall Semester: November 11-13, 2009 (We will waive your application fee to the Graduate School)
  • Spring Semester: February 24-26, 2010 (Must be accepted to an Academic Program at the University of Utah)

Where:

The University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

Why:

We cannot emphasize enough the importance of making an informed decision Two Students On The Grass With A Laptop in choosing a graduate/professional school program. This gives students who are traditionally underrepresented in higher education the opportunity to explore and investigate the University of Utah as one option for a satisfying and meaningful graduate school experience. Our goal is for you to get a snapshot of what graduate school can offer and to introduce the prospective graduate student and the University of Utah community.

Through formal and informal meetings, events and interviews.

Eligibility:

The University Visit Program will be offered on a competitive basis to those individuals who are citizens of the United States or permanent residents and are:

African American, American Indian, Asian American *, Hispanic, or Pacific Islander/Alaskan Native; low income/first generation college students; enrolled full time at a college or university located in the United States or Puerto Rico; seniors, or recent graduates. There are a limited number of visits and we will make every effort to fill your time with relevant information, requiring a full-time commitment of students. Native American Couple Program participants will be selected on their likelihood of academic success should they matriculate at the University of Utah. Round-trip transportation, housing expenses, and board are split by the Graduate School and the Academic program that sponsors you. Meetings may include individual faculty; members of the greater SLC community; The office of Student Affairs; The office of Financial Aid & Scholarships; the Graduate School and current graduate students. Students are encouraged to express an area of interest and ways they can contribute to the community.
